Getting a new lawn established successfully is about more than simply getting grass seed to germinate. Young seedlings need access to the right nutrients at the right time so they can develop strong shoots, deeper roots and a dense, resilient lawn.

SeedBooster® is a specialist seed coating designed to give grass seed that early advantage. By surrounding each seed with nitrogen, the technology puts nutrition exactly where the developing plant needs it, helping the lawn establish faster while making more efficient use of fertiliser.

What is SeedBooster®?

SeedBooster® is a nutrient coating applied directly around individual grass seeds.

Traditionally, sowing a lawn and applying fertiliser are two separate jobs. Seed is sown first before a fertiliser dressing is applied to the wider area to support establishment. SeedBooster® combines these stages.

The coating contains nitrogen that becomes available to the developing grass plant as the seed germinates. Because the nutrient sits immediately around the seed, the young plant can access it from the beginning of its development.

Think of it as each grass seed starting life with its own packed lunch.

SeedBooster® contains a combination of fast- and slow-acting nitrogen, designed to support germinating seeds and developing seedlings throughout approximately their first month of growth. This provides an initial boost as the seed germinates, followed by continued nutrition as its roots and shoots begin to develop.

Making more efficient use of fertiliser

Applying conventional fertiliser across newly seeded soil does not discriminate between desirable grass plants and unwanted weeds. Any plant growing within the treated area may be able to access those nutrients.

SeedBooster® takes a much more targeted approach, as the nitrogen is contained within the coating surrounding the grass seed and it is positioned where the emerging grass plant can make use of it.

Trials have also shown reduced nitrogen leaching compared with establishing conventional seed alongside a separate standard fertiliser application. This greater nutrient efficiency can help reduce waste while supporting healthy lawn establishment.

More nitrogen than a conventional seed coating

Not all coated grass seed performs in the same way. SeedBooster® contains 10% nitrogen, substantially more than the approximately 1–2% nitrogen found in many conventional seed coatings.

The purpose of the coating is therefore not simply to change the physical properties of the seed. It provides a meaningful source of nutrition that can influence the development of the emerging plant.

Trial results: up to 30% more established plants

Independent testing by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) investigated how SeedBooster®-coated grass seed performed during establishment.

The trials found significant improvements compared with untreated seed.

These results are particularly important because successful germination is only part of establishing a lawn.

A seed may germinate, but the young plant must then survive long enough to develop an effective root system and become part of the mature turf. Improving this establishment phase can ultimately mean more of the seed you sow develops into established grass.

Seeing the difference

Perennial ryegrass seedlings three weeks after sowing demonstrate the effect of the technology, with untreated seed shown alongside SeedBooster®-coated seed.

The difference illustrates how targeted nutrition during the earliest stages of establishment can influence both shoot growth and the development of the young grass plant.
