Signs: Small peck holes or disturbed patches of soil and seed on the lawn surface, often appearing shortly after sowing. You may also notice birds feeding repeatedly in the same areas.
Causes: Birds are attracted to newly sown grass seed, loose soil & the insects revealed during ground preparation. Freshly seeded lawns provide an easy food source, especially in dry or cold conditions when natural food is scarce.
Treatment:
-
Lightly rake seed into the soil and apply a thin top dressing to help conceal it.
-
Keep the area evenly moist - birds are less likely to feed on damp soil.
-
Use visual deterrents such as garden netting, reflective tape, or bird scarers during establishment.
Note: Bird activity usually reduces once seed germinates. Good seed-to-soil contact and early protection will help ensure successful establishment without harming wildlife.
